If you have solar panels, you will already know the feeling of watching your system generate electricity on a bright Cyprus morning. What you might not realise is how much of that energy you are actually keeping, and how much is quietly being exported to the grid and credited back to you at a rate lower than what you pay to buy it.
That is how net billing works. And while it is a fair system, it does mean that making the most of your solar investment increasingly comes down to one thing: how much of the energy you generate, you actually use yourself.
Solar battery storage is the answer. By adding a battery system to your setup, you can store the surplus energy your panels generate during the day and draw on it whenever you need it, including evenings, overnight, and on cloudier days. The result is greater energy independence and a significantly better return on your solar panels.
Under net billing, any electricity your solar panels generate that you do not use immediately is exported to the grid. You receive a credit for it, but at a wholesale rate that is lower than the retail rate you pay when you need to buy electricity back.
That gap between what you receive for exported energy and what you pay to import it is exactly where battery storage makes a difference. Rather than sending surplus power to the grid at a lower value, a battery lets you hold onto it and use it yourself at full value later in the day.
For Cyprus homeowners, where solar generation tends to peak during midday hours when many households are at their lowest consumption, this mismatch between generation and usage is significant. Battery storage bridges that gap.
A solar battery storage system connects directly to your existing solar panel setup. During the day, when your panels are generating more electricity than your home is using, the surplus is directed into the battery rather than exported to the grid.
Once the battery is charged, it acts as your personal energy reserve. When the sun goes down or generation drops below your household demand, your home draws from the battery instead of the grid. The system manages this automatically, so there is nothing you need to do differently day to day.
-Lower electricity bills. Using your own stored solar energy instead of grid electricity reduces what you pay each month
-Better return on your solar investment. Instead of exporting surplus energy at a lower rate under net billing, you use it yourself at full value
-Energy independence. Less reliance on the grid means you are less exposed to electricity price changes
-Backup power. Some battery systems can provide power during grid outages, which is a practical consideration for properties in more remote areas of Cyprus
-Reduced carbon footprint. Using more of your own clean energy means drawing less from other sources
Battery storage works best when:
-You already have solar panels installed, or are planning to install them
-Your household uses electricity in the morning and evening rather than mainly during the day
-You want to reduce your reliance on the grid and take greater control of your energy costs
-You want to make sure you are getting the best possible return from your solar panels under net billing
If you are not sure whether your current solar setup is compatible with a battery system, or what capacity would suit your household usage, that is exactly the kind of question the Intergaz Energy Solutions team can help with.
If you do not yet have solar panels, this is a great time to consider combining a solar PV system with battery storage from the outset. Installing them together is often more cost-effective than adding storage later, and you will benefit from both from day one.
With net billing now the standard framework in Cyprus, a combined solar and storage system is increasingly the smart starting point for any new installation. Your installer can advise on what incentive schemes are currently available and how to apply.
If you are already generating solar energy and want to make sure you are keeping as much of it as possible, or if you are considering solar and want to build in storage from the start, we would love to talk it through with you.
